Cape Verde is one of the western most points of Africa. The island country spans an archipelago of 10 islands located in the central Atlantic Ocean, 570 km off the coast of Western Africa.

David Yudovin completed the first channel swim in the country with yesterday’s very difficult 10.3 nm swim across Canal de São Vicente between the islands of Santo Antão to the island of São Vicente.

The swim was received with great enthusiasm and was covered by live radio and national television,” said the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame Honour Swimmer. “The conditions were really rough all the way, taking 5 hours 44 minutes.

It has been one of the most challenging swims I have ever done. It has been 3 years of logistics and establishing a support team that includes Altino Goulart from the island of Faial, Azores who did the groundwork and swim planning and piloted the primary boat. Goulart also worked with me on the swims in the Azores and Madeira Island swims. We were in Cape Verde for over a month and the wind did not drop below 20 km day or night. The islands are barren, but the water is as clear and blue as I have ever seen. some days it feels like floating in clear air.”
