Research after research has looked at the reasons for happy and unhappy marriages.

One study reports the health and attitude of the husband plays a major role in marriage bliss while other studies confirm the adage, “Happy wife, happy life.”

A wife’s happiness in the marriage has the power to overtake a husband’s marital unhappiness to make his overall life quite pleasant,” Deborah Carr, professor of sociology at Rutgers University and co-author of a marital happiness study, told The Huffington Post. “That was the finding that makes people say, ‘Happy wife, happy life.’ But it cuts the other way, ‘Miserable wife, miserable life.'”

While all kinds of happily long-married spouses who dot the open water swimming landscape [see below], most couples are married to a non-swimming spouse. In both cases, the swimming spouse has to balance their love of the open water with their non-swimming spouse’s preference for terra firma.

Thomas Noblett explains how he balances his own marital happiness with open water swimming above from Montenegro.

As Noblett explains well, married couples seem to be able to make their individual sacrifices and challenges easier to bear while their mutual joys seem to be more frequent and intense. The comingling of mutual sleeping patterns, training needs, traveling desires, and eating preferences become easier when both partners understand each others goals so thoroughly.
