Romanian Avram Iancu continues on his stage swim of 2,860 km, forecasted to last 60 days, along the Danube River through Europe.

The 41-year-old librarian from Petrosani, Transylvania started his stage swim from Donaueschingen in the Black Forest in Germany. He is now heading into Day 80 as each day is a dynamically different replication of the day before.

Day 78 on September 5th

Today Iancu swam 38 km, arriving at the 370 km milestone. “I am glad I passed the 400 km milestone and Bulgaria. The Danube was until now flowing along the border between Romania and Bulgaria. Now I am totally in Romania,” he said. He ended the day at the place where the Danube forms another channel – the Borcea arm – so the team sat down for a meeting in order to decide whether it would be best to continue on the main stream of the Danube or follow the Borcea arm. They decided to continue swimming on the main stream until they reach the Bala arm, which eventually joins the Borcea arm.

Day 79 on September 6th

Iancu started swimming on the main stream of the Danube and soon arrived at the place where the Danube splits again – into the Bala arm. The currents here are quite strong, but he managed to get past them. Being accompanied by the kayak and another small boat, his safety was never at risk. He swam the Bala arm which later joined the Borcea arm.

This arm has its own milestone – from 100 km to 0 km – and today I arrived at the 63 km milestone after I swam 40 km. I felt very good physically and positive mentally; the weather was nice, with a little wind here and there. I was slightly cold today – the water temperature is dropping around half a degree every two days, today being around 23.5°C.
