Simon Sinek, author of Start With Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action, advises, “A mentor is not someone who walks ahead of us to show us how they did it. A mentor walks alongside us to show us what we can do.”

In the open water swimming world and especially in the marathon swimming, wild swimming, channel swimming, ice swimming and winter swimming communities, this advice is often followed.

It is rare – almost unknown – that a veteran open water swimmer keeps information confidential to himself or herself. Experienced open water swimmers almost always not only share their experiences and advice with newcomers, but they also often go swimming side-by-side with those who are new to the sport. They spent time with others in the sport, freely sharing information on pacing, feeding, training, recovery, pilots, observers, equipment, training and logistics, both online and in person.
