In 1962, Frank Morris, Clarence Anglin and John Anglin remain the only people who have escaped Alcatraz and never been found — a disappearance that is one of the country’s most notorious unsolved mysteries [see reports above].

27-year-old Tatsuma Hirao recently tried a similar open water escape in his native Japan, but was later found and captured on the Japanese mainland – unlike Morris and the Anglin brothers in California.

Hirao escaped from a low-security jail and then swam 200 meters from the former island prison on Mukaishima in the Seto Inland Sea to the Japanese mainland in Hiroshima. In a drawn-out three-week search that gripped Japan, Hirao had more than 1,000 police chasing after him as he hid in vacant houses on Mukaishima to evade the search teams. He was recently recaptured within three weeks on the island [the final take-down is shown on Japanese television below].
