Hiroko Ashikawa, Chie Hitomi, Yuichi Nakagawa, Takayuki Tsutsui, Takeshi Yoshida, Soda Ken, Keiko Sasaki, Hiroyuki Matsuura and Youri Lavoine completed a 40 km Sado Island crossing today in 11 hours 31 minutes 21 seconds after starting on Sado Island in the Sea of Japan and heading across currents to the western shores of Honshu on the Japanese mainland.

Team leader Masayuki Moriya commented on the swimmers, “Other than Ashikawa, this was the first channel swimming experience for all the other swimmers on the team. Lavoine liked it so much she signed up for a 3-person relay attempt of the Tsugaru Channel later this season.

We started at the port on Sado Island 42 minutes after midnight and made landfall in Nagaoka City in Niigata Prefecture at 1:13 pm with the water temperature holding about 16℃ the entire distance. But the waves, currents and winds were minimal so they were able to enjoy flat conditions.
