In the major international competitions, the goal is a vertical finish where the athletes must touch (not just cross the vertical plane).

In the recent FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup race in Eilat, Israel, third place Evgeny Drattsev of Russia perfectly timed his reach up and forward to the finish behind victorious Spyridon Gianniotis of Greece and second-place Thomas Lurz of Germany.

Where every centimeter and second count, this type of finish will serve Evgeny well at the upcoming Olympic 10km Marathon Swim in London.

Javier Blázquez Bermudo, an outstanding sports photographer from Andalucia, Spain, caught the exact moment.
