60-year-old John DaPrato, 61-year-old James Penrose, and 42-year-old David Cook met up on the shores of Spain to knock off one of the Oceans Seven channel: the Strait of Gibraltar.
Penrose completed his third Oceans Seven channel with his 5 hour 4 minute crossing.
“We had good conditions and it absolutely great to see white African sand from 40 feet above,” said DaPrato who completed the crossing in 5 hours 16 minutes. “I trained hard for this one and it was great to finish the crossing with some very tough soloists, James (5:04) and David (5:20). We made the front page of the sports section of a major Spanish newspaper. Open water swimming is alive & well in Spain!“
DaPrato completed swims across the United States in Alaska, the Great Salt Lake in Utah, San Francisco Bay in California, and Boston Harbor in Massachusetts.
His Strait of Gibraltar crossing this month is right in line with DaPrato’s self-defined career as an adventure swimmer and adventure writer.
“By taking on these swims over the last 5 years, I hope to encourage other middle-of-the-pack marathon swimmers to take risks.”
