The Swim Across America San Francisco Swim pulled in some big bucks on behalf of two local cancer programs.
With the University of California San Francisco Benioff Children’s Cancer Survivorship Program and the Center for Cancer Research at Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland in mind and a 23ºF (13ºC) difference in the air and water temperature (85ºF air vs. 62ºF), swimmers traversed 1.5 miles (or a 0.5 mile) from under the Golden Gate Bridge to Crissy Field Beach. Over US$500,000 was raised in the annual charity swim.
“We had 9 teams raise over US$10,000 each,” said co-event director Susan Helmrich. “Our top team was Team Grant raising over US$83,000. Next up was Team Susan Survives who raised over US$62,000 and the third place team was Menlo Masters Team BASS raising over US$54,000.”
