Gellért Gábor is the coach of Szegedi Úszó Egylet (Swimming Club of Szeged). He coached both Melinda Novoszath (on left in above photo) and Anna Olasz (on right) at the recent FINA 10 km Marathon Swimming World Cup and 15 km FINA Open Water Swimming Grand Prix in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

Olasz, a freshman student at Arizona State University, experienced two extremely close races on successive weekends in rough water conditions off the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. In the first 15 km Grand Prix, she was barely touched out for first by Angela Maurer. In the second 10 km World Cup race, she finished together with a giant lead pack of 9 swimmers (see results below). “The [FINA World Cup] race was really; the waves were huge again,” recalls Olasz. “I was doing pretty well, but I made some mistakes in the last lap. We all finished together at the end, 9 swimmers.”

When 9 swimmers come barreling into the finish chute together, especially in rough water conditions, it is very difficult for the human eye of the judges to determine the placings of each athlete. It took a few hours to decide the results and hand out the medals (and prize money). But the results were later changed “From fifth place, I went eighth,” Olasz recalls. “Next time, I need to make sure I lead more [so] there are no questions about my position.”
