The Australian men dominated the 45th annual Waikiki Roughwater Swim again. Although they were pushed by Japanese Yasunari Hirai, at the end of the day, the watermen from Western Australia proved their speed, stamina and ocean knowledge too much.

Simon Huitenga just outlasted Rhys Mainstone who has going for an unprecedented three-peat among the men. It was a difficult, hard-fought race, less than 24 hours after both of them had competed in a another tough 10 km marathon swim on Maui at the postponed Pan Pacific Swimming Championship 10 km.

The conditions and venue across Waikiki Bay proved to be easier on those comfortable with ocean swimming and navigation. Veterans dotted the top 35 finishers, including 11 men and women over the age of 40.

But it was also a day when the safety personnel were called up as one athlete passed away during the race, the first fatality in the 45 years of the iconic race. For the latest information, visit here.
