Looking back in the archives of the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim (MIMS), there were a number of renowned swimmers competing in the June 12th 1999 race:

*5-time winner and 7-time world professional marathon swimming champion Shelley Taylor-Smith was serving as a partner swimmer for blind swimmer James Pitter as well as 1997 victor Tammy van Wisse and 2-time winner Susie Maroney.

Taylor-Smith, Pittar and Maroney are all Honour Swimmers in the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame (IMSHOF) while Van Wisse holds numerous marathon records. But the eventual winner was another 25 km world champion Tobie Smith of Texas. Additionally, eventual 21-time MIMS finisher Kristian Rutford and IMSHOF Honour Swimmers Dr. Marcella MacDonald, Sally Minty-Gravett, Alison Streeter also competed.
