On this November 20th day in 1962, 27-year-old Barry Devonport completed the first crossing of the Cook Strait from the North Island to the South Island in 11 hours 20 minutes.

Since Devonport’s triumphant pioneering swim, 94 successful crossings have been made by 84 individuals from 11 countries.
