The Pirita Open is a winter swimming festival held in the Pirita river in Tallinn, Estonia.

Part of the International Winter Swimming World Cup circuit, the Pirita Open is splendid with its pool decks are covered in white, snow-white. The 2016 was held in 1.4ºC water and -1.5ºC air temperatures.

But the competition heated up when Petar Stoychev, Christof Wandratsch and Henri Kaarma jumped in the pool to raced – literally raced at a 1:12+ per 100m pace – in the 450m freestyle.

How these athletes swim so quickly – with open turns and no dives – in these low temperatures is a credit to their mental outlook, physical training and hardening process.
