Charlotte Brynn and others will participate in the new Skinner Island/Smuggler’s Cave Swim, an 18-mile (28.9 km) marathon swim organized by the Northeast Kingdom Open Water Swimming Association.

The 28.9 km marathon swim will be held on July 9th in Vermont’s Lake Memphremagog.

Skinner’s Island is an 18-mile smuggler swim in honor of Uriah Skinner who hid on the island trying to escape federal agents 208 years ago, while he was smuggling goods from Canada in the United States,” explains Brynn. “He eluded the law, but never made it off the island. His bones were found 100 years later.

We are swimming from Newport [Vermont] to the island in Canada and back to Newport. The goal is to find the submerged cave, and unlike Skinner, make it off the island and back to Newport. It is an 18-mile adventure for sure.
