Local speedster Aukai Lileikis placed 8th overall in the uber-competitive Waikiki Roughwater Swim, finishing in 56:09. The 19-year-old out-paced his uncle Thomas Lileikis (58:59) and his 54-year-old father, a two-time winner of the event (1981 and 1982), Joe Lileikis, 99th in 1:13:38, his 32nd career race across Waikiki.

It was also a family affair among Australians.

17-year-old Reece Southall from Brisbane, Australia and his 54-year-old father, Martyn Southall swam their first Waikiki Roughwater Swim.

Reece covered the course in 1:04:30 while Martyn followed behind, caught in the rip tides and reef turbulence, finishing 607th overall in 2:50:41.

It is a superb event, technically challenging, but in a superb location and look forward to coming back to compete again in the Hawaiian Islands,” said dad. “Reece will continue to prepare, under guidance of Brendan Capell, for 2018 Rottnest Channel 20 km event in Western Australia.”
