Starting on Meis, the closest Greek island to the Turkish mainland, in the harbour of Castellorizo (aka Castellorizon or Kastelorizo), swimmers finish in Kaş Harbour in Turkey. Castellorizo is known in Greek as Megisti and, in Turkish, as Meis. It is the smallest and most easterly of the Dodecanese Islands situated roughly halfway between the well-known island of Rhodes and the major Turkish Port of Antalya. The race is part of the Kaş Festival organised by the Kaş Municipality. Ufuk Güven explains, “There is not a strong current in the course and we expect the water temperature to be around 22°C. Swimmers must be at least 18 years of age and must undergo a health check by a physician before the race. They also must be able to swim 1500m in less than 30 minutes.
