Gregorio Paltrinieri Won Gold In 2017, But What About 2019 World University Games?

2016 Olympic 1500m champion Gregorio Paltrinieri is one of the favorites at the upcoming 10 km swim in South Korea’s FINA World Championships.
He is also a pre-race favorite to become a Olympic 10K Marathon Swim qualifier.
He was joined on the podium on the women’s side by Hungarian Anna Olasz.
But there will be no Paltrinieri or Olasz at the 2019 Summer Universiade (World University Games) at Napoli, Italy – because there is no open water swimming event on the schedule.
Steven Munatones said, “At the 2013 Universiade in Kazan, Russia and at the 2015 Universiade in Gwangju, South Korea, there were very competitive 10 km marathon swimming competitions. Same with the 2017 Universiade in Taiwan [see results below]. But nothing is scheduled in the open water in Napoli, Italy – this is unfortunate, especially because of the long history of open water swimming in Napoli, the location of the long-running, professionally run Maratona del Golfo Capri-Napoli.”
But in the era when open water swimming competitions were previously held at the Summer Universiade, winners like Paltrinieri said, “I’ve achieved extraordinary results in my life, but I don’t stop dreaming.” His dream is to be successful in both in the pool and open water – and he is well on his way to achieve the Mellouli Double at the 2019 FINA World Championships and possibly at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
The then Hungarian 23-year-old Olympian won the 10 km marathon swim in the calm water that was measured at 30°C at 5 am, an hour before the scheduled 6 am start.
