Today on the North Shore of Oahu on the renowned surfing spot of Waimea Bay, a pair of 30-somethings – Davide Giardini and Lexie Kelly – went shoulder-to-shoulder for much of the the Aqua Sphere North Shore 5K Swim course.

Giardini, a triathlete originally from Desenzano del Garda, Italy and currently training in Boulder, Colorado, won in 1:04:43.6 with a strong push towards the end.

All the 10 km marathon swimmers finished the course which went from Waimea Bay to Sunset Beach and back to Waimea Bay. Race director Chris Gardner reported, “We had 2 legendary Hawaiian watermen – Carl Kawauchi and Ulrich Klinke, both 75 years young, who competed. We are so proud of these two and all our swimmers.”
